A fable for Mental Health

This story is about a group of Mice who live alongside a Cat.

The Cat is always present but often sneaky and just out of sight, doing everything it can to hunt the Mice, making their lives difficult.

The Mice agree on a plan to put a bell on the cat in order to warn them of its presence, but this plan requires courage and determination.

With support and encouragement, one mouse takes it upon themself to find the cat and place a bell collar around its neck. The mouse feels scared, but courageous, nervous but determined. The brave mouse approaches the cat and successfully places the bell around its neck.

Thinking about Mental Health, this situation could be likened to recognising the need for proactive measures to improve poor mental health such as seeking therapy or support. While the idea might be acknowledged as beneficial, taking the actual steps can be daunting - requiring support from others, courage and determination.

Just as the Mice need support to recognise their feline problem, courage to confront the Cat to put a bell on it, and determination to live alongside the Cat but be alerted to its presence - those suffering with Mental Health challenges need the same.

Using Mental Health First Aid training, we teach you to recognise and support those with poor Mental Health. Helping them to put a bell on their cat.

Meet the Team

Bell the Cat’s mental health first aid training is run and managed by Daniel Hobson.

Dan works as a Barber, retraining in 2023 after 12 years experience in Creative Industries, facilitation and community management.

After seeking support for his own mental health and discovering that so many people in the barber chair have their own struggles, he founded Bell the Cat in order to help as many people as possible recognise and support those with poor mental health.
